A lot will depend on the company you buy it from. If you get a new fabric sofa ‘off the shelf’ so to speak, the delivery will be faster than if you choose one that is going to be custom made for you.
Another thing to bear in mind if you are buying online is that you will want to order a swatch of fabric before you order the sofa itself. It isn’t advisable to order the sofa until you have seen the fabric it will be made from. It could be very different from how it looks online and the last thing you want is to take delivery of your new sofa and find you don’t like it.
The important thing to remember is to err on the side of caution at all times. If the company says that delivery is typically four weeks, allow more to be on the safe side. Remember the word ‘typically’ – this basically means ‘on average’ and it could be faster or it could be slower. It all depends on the sofa you want and what the lead time is at the time you order it.
There may be times when it doesn’t really matter if your sofa turns up a bit later than you had expected. For instance you might not be waiting for a specific date and so a few days either side would be fine. But if you are expecting it for Christmas and it turns up after New Year, obviously it would be a big disappointment.

If you don’t allow some extra time you may end up getting disappointed and that would be a shame, especially if you have family visiting at the time.
